Dr. Leonard “Len” Robert Scharmach, 92, of Wauwatosa, WI, formerly of Kenosha, WI, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2026, at St. Camillus Senior Living.
Born on February 5, 1934, in Milwaukee, WI, he was the son of the late Max Leo and Angeline (Harowski) Scharmach. He attended St. Anthony Catholic School in Milwaukee, WI; St. Francis Seminary in St. Francis, WI; Gregorian University Rome from 1954 until 1959, where he earned his S.T.L degree. He then served as Parish Priest at St. James Catholic Church in Kenosha, WI from 1959-1965. Later, he served as Chaplain at The Newman Catholic Ministry at UW-Whitewater from 1965-1969. In 1983, he earned his doctorate from UW-Milwaukee. Before retiring he worked as a professor of Sociology at Carthage College from 1972 until 2001.
Len lived in Milwaukee for most of his life, then Kenosha, WI from 1972 until moving to Wauwatosa, WI in 2014.
On January 22, 1972, he married Mary Rose Wimmer at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lanark, WI. She preceded him in death on March 22, 2026.
He was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church when he lived in Kenosha, WI.
Len is survived by his sister-in-law, Pat “Agnes” Pire; brother-in-law, David H. Wimmer; nieces and nephews, and other special family members and friends.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Max Scharmach.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 20, 2026, at St. Camillus in the Guardian Angel Chapel, 10100 W Bluemound Road, Wauwatosa, WI, 53226, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of Mass at 1:00 p.m. Interment in All Saints Cemetery and Mausoleum in Pleasant Prairie, WI, will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Alverno College, Jesuits at St Camillus, or St. Camillus Foundation (for the missions) would be appreciated by the family.
