Howard Haralson was born June 22, 1926, in Lena, MS, to the late Ollie and Dovie Haralson. He was the third born of fifteen children, seven girls and seven boys. One sibling died shortly after birth. Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Essie Stallworth, Christine Shepherd and Mattie Greer; three brothers, Houston Haralson, Herbert Haralson and Clifton Haralson. Howard was baptized at an early age at Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Lena, MS. He received his formal education at Cedar Grove School. After that he joined the United States Navy and served in World War II. Following his service to his country he resided in Jackson, MS, where he met and married Lillie Mae Willis and to that union one son, Howard Lemar was born. Howard later relocated to Milwaukee, WI. Following his divorce he met and married Geneva Bates and to that union a son, Kenneth was born. Howard was employed with John Box, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Railroad and retired from the Entenmann’s Bakery of Northlake, IL. As a young boy growing up in Mississippi, Howard was an avid hunter as well as a great swimmer. One of his passions as an adult was the game of pool. He entered and was often a winner in the tournaments he participated in. His most favored pastime in his mature years was fishing. Howard was wickedly humorous and quite the prankster and jokester. He will be fondly remembered by those who were recipients of his unique and one of a kind nicknames that he often gave to those around him. His family remembers him as an excellent provider and Geneva’s love and devotion to him was unwavering as she sought to make sure that his comfort and well-being was first and foremost during his health challenges even as she experienced her own. Howard entered into eternal peace at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Hospitality Nursing Rehabilitation Center of Kenosha, WI. Howard will be greatly missed by his family and leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife Geneva, two sons, Howard Lemar and Kenneth. In addition he is also survived by two step-daughters, Jannette Smith of North Chicago (Ray) and Minnie Lyons of Dallas, TX; one step-son, Bishop Walter L. Bates of Milwaukee, WI; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bernice Richmond, Memphis, TN, Dorothy Johnson, Milwaukee, WI, Flora Haralson, Chicago, IL, and Ella Haralson, Chicago, IL; three brothers, Clyde Haralson (Maxine), Chicago, IL; Malcolm, Chicago, IL and James (Elnora) Haralson, Chicago, IL, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 10th, at Proko Funeral Home at 12:00 noon. Interment will be private.
