To The Family: I am so very, very sorry to JUST learn of your loss, my Father just told me. The article in Mondays paper was beautiful. As I sit here typing this I'm crying for your loss. I will always remember how gentle and loving a person she was and the great pride she took in ALL her family. Being close in age to some of you, there were times I was jealous of the warmth and unconditional love she showed ALL her children. Through the many years that passed since we were neighbors, whenever I saw Nona she always had a smile that warmed me. My deepest sympathy to all of you. Sincerely, Mary

My first memory of Nona (and it must go back 28 years now) is sitting with her at the big round wooden table in the Pascucci kitchen at 5306 36th Avenue on a warm Sunday afternoon. It was a delight. She'd piled the table high with hamburger buns, tomatoes, lettuce, mustard, potato chips, and every kind of cold cuts known to humanity. And all around us was a happy, constantly changing swirl of kids and grandkids and great-grandkids and in-laws, along with their spouses and partners and boyfriends and girlfriends and neighbors. Nona and Ernie's kids dropped in with boxes of pastries and cartons of soft drinks. Squealing, happy grandkids were playing in the backyard and roaming around the house. And Nona, throughout it all, was chatting and joking and relaxing and laughing and enjoying every minute. *In the last few days, I keep thinking about two images of Ernie and Nona together. The first is actually a black-and-white photo from the 1940s of a young (maybe in their early 20s?), attractive couple in a classy restaurant, dressed to the nines. His arm is around her. Each is smiling. They're clearly very much in love. You can almost see on their faces that they're about to start their life with each other. The second image is just last year in their apartment when Ernie—this exceptionally strong man who has been his family's provider and caregiver—was serving Nona breakfast, shuttling to the pharmacy for her medications, and gently helping her stand up with her walker. After 60 years of crises and celebrations and surprises, the love between these two was as deep as it ever was.*Both of them together did a terrific job of raising their family. From when I first met Nona, it was clear to me that her job description in life was mom and grandma. Every mom has her own style. Nona was like the best union shop steward in the world: making sure everyone was happy and had what they needed, getting everyone to do their jobs right, mediating disputes, filing grievances, watching so that no one got into trouble or strayed off the reservation. Unlike the average shop steward, however, she gave lots and lots of hugs, and she made sure everyone was bundled up in cold weather.*Nona and Ernie's kids and grandkids are all very distinct personalities and, in several ways, quite different from each other. At the same time, they just as definitely have things in common. They are all open-hearted and affectionate. They are all candid and speak their minds. They all have an innate sweetness and a great sense of humor. And they all have that Wisconsin accent that, if you've been away from it for a while, welcomes you home and warms you. Clearly, Nona lives on through them. That suggests something pretty important about Nona. She lived her life surrounded by people whom she adored and loved, and who adored and loved her. I was lucky enough to be one of them. Now, may this wonderful woman, whose hugs and laughter and sandwiches I'll never forget, rest in peace.
